THE ARTIST AT WORK: KAREN SARGSYAN
Some people are made to make art, but great artists are born to create art. Karen Sargsyan is such a great artist. We had the pleasure to interview him last week at his workplace, as a preview on his next exquisite exhibition in the Groninger Museum.
As a former resident artist at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam the Dutch-Armenian artist Karen Sargsyan (1973) has been awarded as most promising young talent. He has traveled around the world with his figurative sculptures from paper cuttings.
The seemingly ordinary use of materials as paper and the simple technique of cutting is the heart of all his work, together with the inspiration he gets from movement and theatrics.
For his current work Sargsyan let himself be influenced by the contrast between art & science and his belief that for practicing science properly that what needed is not only pure rationality but also creativity.
Karen Sargsyan invited us to visit his studio, a creative laboratory where his work is created. We saw a very personal area with drawings of his daughter on the wall, bits and pieces of scrap paper on the floor and a glue pistol. As we were walking through his sanctuary we felt ourselves frozen in the space-time continuum every time we looked at the different shapes of the three-dimensional objects made from colored pieces of paper. The sculptures surprised us every time we looked at them from a different angle or distance. Surprisingly the sculptures came to live not when we got closer but when we got further away. Having the overview of all the sculptures made them come to life: paper people on the move, on their way, in action, having an expression not only in their face but also in the way they are positioned.
We realized the exposition has more than meets the eye. To understand the impact the exposition made on us you should really visit Karen Sargsyan’s expo in the internationally renowned Groninger Museum. We really tried to get the amazing sculptures on camera, but like a fantastic view, you can’t catch the soul, you have to be there and experience the whole environment.

WELCOME TO COWBOYS 2 CATWALK
Cowboys 2 Catwalk started in the summer of 2006 with the goal of creating the perfect male shopping experience. We took our inspiration from the famous cigar store P.G.C. Hajenius on the Rokin in Amsterdam, a place that in our opinion excites all of the senses of a man when purchasing a product.
At the moment Cowboys 2 Catwalk carries labels such as Viktor & Rolf, ACNE, Givenchy, Rick Owens DRKSHDW, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Prps, PLAY Comme des Garcons, Damir Doma SILENT, Filippa K. and Folk. Cowboys 2 Catwalk is in addition also the franchise partner of ACNE Studio Netherlands and Fred Perry store Amsterdam.
With that said the features on our blog will be a filtration of our ideas, inspirations and unexpected encounters between new and old friends. Cowboys 2 Catwalk to us is more than a store, it’s a friend and family feeling where we work together with a shared passion and love for the product.
We hope you will enjoy and get inspired by our blog. If you would like to stay in touch please follow us on Facebook or Twitter.
Yours Sincerely,
Cowboys 2 Catwalk
JEANS WITH A SENSE OF FREEDOM
As we find ourselves celebrating our freedom on the 5th of May for the 31st time, a special piece from Levi’s Vintage 501 with the big E is really a one of kind denim. This Cone Mills 12oz Red Selvage Denim finds its heritage after World War II, when raw materials finally were available again. It was a start of retrospect and the start of the new slimmer fitting 501 for the decades ahead. Jeans of a new free generation, with a sense of freedom and revelry like Marlon Brando and James Dean showcased the creative era ahead.
PREVIEW: PLAY in HELL
Based on the weekly comic strip ‘Life in Hell’ by Matt Groening, Comme des Garçons PLAY teamed up with Matt Groening what resulted in the creation of 4 t-shirts: PLAY in HELL. These t-shirts, designed by Rei Kawakubo and approved by Matt Groening, are the first in a planned series. The collaboration of PLAY and Life in Hell will continue for a few years, as part of the overall PLAY collection.
The PLAY in HELL collection is based on the weekly comic strip Life in Hell by Matt Groening which started in 1977, and features anthropomorphic rabbits and a pair of gay lovers. Groening, creator of the Simpsons, uses these characters to explore a wide range of topics about love, sex, work and death. His drawings are full of expressions of angst, alienation, self loathing and fear of inevitable doom
Cowboys 2 Catwalk will exclusively sell this unique collaboration in Amsterdam. And will be available at the end of July.
MASTERS OF LINEN
We’re happy to present you Vlas Blomme as a new premium Japanese label. The exquisite collection is created and made from natural materials, using special Kortrijk Linen, one of the highest graded linen available. The Kortrijk Linen helps to create Vlas Blomme’s signature worn-in, rich and comfortable clothing collection that cannot be found in the typical fashion store.
One of our favourite items in the collection is shown in the picture below. A modern interpretation of the classic cardigan with slit cuffs and a-symmetric button placket. Make sure you smell the garments when you visit our shop, it’s the true country life.
